The Azuaje Ravine of Gran Canaria is the natural precipice that separates the towns of Firgas and Moya and is declared as a special nature reserve.
Our meeting points for the beginning of the route will be in the auditorium Alfredo Kraus in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, or in the south at the Tourist Information Office in the Yumbo Shopping Center, where we will head towards the beautiful town of Firgas where you are going to be able to admire its original and colorful rural environment.
We are going to start the hiking route descending to the Azuaje Ravine, where the route is in its major part traveled through a canyon with impressive walls up to 100 meters high by a way that passes by a spring while we appreciate the abundant vegetation at the background cliff.
One of the curiosities that will surprise you is that the lack of natural light during most of the day has caused a phenomenon called "gigantism" which sometimes is develop by some plants. One example are the Tabaibas.
Continuing our walking route through the beautiful landscapes of this ravine, we will arrive to some ruins that time ago were an international renowned bath in which the first tourists from the north of Europe stayed. They used to come because it was said that these waters cured and helped many people, and to enjoy the warm climate that characterizes Gran Canaria. Stories about ghost appearances have been described in this place.
Continuing discovering and admiring the zone, we will observe lots of endemic plant species such as laurisilva, which is a type of evergreen rain forest composed of laurel, a specie that demands humidity and barbusano characterized by the deformation of its leaves caused by insect bites.
There are also eatable species as adroño and yoyas, which were part of the diet of ancient canaries. These species spread across North Africa and Southern Europe in the tertiary period just before the last glaciation.
Finally we will return to have lunch at a local restaurant where you can taste the typical dishes of the canarian cuisine.
